Message from His Worship Pt Ubraj Narine, Mayor of the City of Georgetown on the occasion of Holi (Phagwah)

I extend to all Guyanese happy Phagwah greetings. Phagwah or Holi is celebrated by Hindus across our country as a festival of colour and brings joy and happiness to our communities. It is embraced by all Guyanese as a national festival that brings together citizens from all backgrounds to celebrate with each other the joy of humanity.

Our country has faced significant struggles in the last few years as the COVID pandemic disturbed our way of life resulting in distress and feelings of hopelessness. It is my belief that national celebrations like Holi can serve to rejuvenate our kindred spirit as we work together to fight against prejudice and inequality.

The threat of global instability should remind us that our strength lies in our people and our right to determine our own future; to realize the Guyana that our fore-parents dreamed for us – a land that is great and free.

Our new oil and gas economy has the potential to ensure current and future generations are able to enjoy a better standard of living, only if we work together.

I encourage all leaders to band together and work towards a common purpose – ensuring the safety and prosperity of all Guyanese.

Happy Holi to all Guyanese!
