Mayor Narine visits ongoing Stabroek sanitation exercise

His Worship Pt Ubraj Narine this morning visited the ongoing sanitation exercise at the Stabroek Market and its environs. 

Mayor Narine expressed gratitude to the Council’s administration for its execution. The sanitation of the markets was approved by the Council in September 2021.  

The “neat and clean” initiative which was conceptualized by the Council aims to organize vending to reduce encumbrances and provide structured economic activity. 

His Worship stressed that as he continues to stand with vendors to protect their bread and butter, vendors must also work with the Council and adhere to the rules while they conduct business.  

His Worship Pt Ubraj Narine and Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore meet US Senator James Sanders Jr

His Worship Pt Ubraj Narine this morning met with Senator James Sanders Jnr of the New York 10th Senate District. The Mayor welcomed Senator Sanders to Georgetown and briefed him on the social, political and economic profile of the City. 

Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore who was also present shared the sentiments of the Mayor and welcomed the Senator to the city. 

Senator Sanders indicated that his constituents represent a large section of Guyanese people and he is proud to represent them. He stated that his visit is to familiarize himself with the country and to get a better appreciation of the Guyanese culture.  

Mayor Narine stated that despite the hostile political climate, the Council continues to provide services to the citizens of Georgetown with its limited resources. He expressed gratitude to the US Government through the US AID programme for its continued support, most recently the donation of a tractor to assist the solid waste department. 

Senator Sanders commented that Guyana has produced talented people and he is open to engaging with the Council to provide assistance. He expressed interest in a twinning initiative to facilitate an exchange of skills to support the City.  

Mayor Ubraj Narine congratulates Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton MP and Member of Parliament Volda Lawrence. 

I extend sincere congratulations to Mr Aubrey Norton on his selection to serve as a member of parliament in the National Assembly of Guyana and his election to the post of Leader of the Opposition. 

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition no doubt will provide the balance and scrutiny in the interest of the people of Guyana that is necessary. This Office is a critical pillar of our democracy.  

I also congratulate former Minister of Health Volda Lawrence, on her selection as a member of parliament. Ms Lawrence brings a wealth of experience and is no stranger to the representation of the people.  

I look forward to working with the Leader of the Opposition and members of the parliament on behalf of all citizens. 

This moment represents an opportunity for Government and the Opposition to work together as we build our nation, protect our citizens and ensure equitable opportunities for all Guyanese.

Town Clerk (ag) Candace Nelson, Senior Officers of MCC, Guyana Police Force and Fire Service scope out Stabroek Market ahead of clean up

Town Clerk (ag) Candace Nelson along with senior officers of the MCC Administration as well as the Guyana Police Force and the Fire Service engaged vendors and walked through the Stabroek market area this afternoon.

The walkabout was executed in advance of the cleanup and sanitization exercise scheduled to be held on Wednesday 20th April 2022. 

The Council continues to clean markets and sensitize vendors on their responsibility to ensure their surroundings are cleaned before and after business. 

Mayor Narine meets Ghana Day Organisation

His Worship Pt Ubraj Narine met with a delegation led by Sis Penda Guyan, President of the Ghana Day Organisation.  Sis Guyan engaged the Mayor on working together to support the community activities of the Mayor and City Council. 

Mayor Narine indicated that the Council supports cultural organisations and values their contribution to society. 

The discussions proposed the establishment of an MoU to protect the historical significance of Parade Ground. This recognition will prevent the erection of structures on the ground in homage to the enslaved Africans who were executed in 1823 following the Demerara Revolt. 

Closure of Stabroek Market 2022.04.20

The Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown will be conducting a sanitization and cleaning exercise at the Stabroek Market and its environs on Wednesday 20th April, 2022 from 7 am (07:00 hours).

The market and vending areas will be closed, however you are invited to participate in this exercise.

Vendors and Stallholders will not be permitted to open, use or occupy your stalls, stands etc, on this day in order to facilitate this clean-up.

Mayor Narine meets Chief Fire Officer (ag) Gregory Whickham

His Worship Pt Ubraj Narine and Councillor Gregory Fraser along with Town Clerk ag Candace Nelson this morning met with the  Chief Fire Officer ag Gregory Whickham

His Worship congratulated Mr Whickham on his promotion to the post of Chief Fire Officer (ag) and expressed his interest in continuing the working relationship between the two entities. 

Mayor Narine indicated that the meeting is timely as Georgetown continues to see increased construction activities. He noted that the recent fires are of concern and proposed an enhanced relationship between the Municipality and the Fire Service in an effort to ensure the buildings have adequate fire suppression systems. He indicated that the continued development of Georgetown must ensure the safety of citizens and investments are prioritized. 

Mayor Narine indicated that he stands strongly with vendors who depend on the road for their daily bread, however, he recognized the challenges which occur around the central fire station. He stated that the Council will relocate vendors which would cause congestion around the fire station. The Mayor stated that he continues to engage with vendors to sensitize them on the necessity of a clean and organized operation while the Council make its interventions. 

His Worship commended the plan by the Fire Service to install additional fire hydrants in the City. He proposed that a policy to protect these hydrants be established to ensure they are free from encumbrances. The Mayor committed the Council through the City Works Committee to engage with the Fire Service to ensure that the location of hydrants along with the policy of protection is prioritized. 

The Town Clerk indicated that as a part of its cleaning and sanitization efforts of markets requested the continued collaboration with the Fire Service to wash down after cleaning would be appreciated.

The Fire Chief committed to continuing the engagement and welcomed the collaboration with the Municipality and the Fire Service which has been a longstanding one.
